Season's Greetings

I wish everyone a warm, peaceful Christmas.

I am choked up with my reaction to the state of the world at present, so I send no messages, other than this wintry shot of one of my favourite cities; a personal reminder of how privileged I feel to have spent so many years of my life as a citizen of Europe.

Regensburg, and its ancient bridge over the Danube

  3. Season’s greetings! I, too, am particularly fond of Regensburg. My visit there was most enjoyable. I remember your chronicling of your visit to this fine city during your 1809 campaign retracements.

  4. Happy Christmas to you Sir, hope you have a goodie. I too have been to Regensburg, many years ago, lovely place as is Bavaria in general.

  5. Now that's a place I would like to go and see...
Have a great Xmas, keep the news switched off!

  6. Have a great Christmas and New Year - not sure I have ever been to Regensburg - I certainly went to Bavaria twice in my distant youth (circa 1979/80) so I may have done. Unfortunately, (?) all I really remember about the trips is Hacker-Pschorr beer and Apfelkorn, the Oktoberfest, visiting Dachau and a lovely young lady called Christl I spent an enjoyable evening with!
Interestingly, I realized years later that the guy who I stayed with on both occasions had become a German celebrity...."Jürgen Tonkel was born on 23 August 1962 in Höhenrain, Wolfratshausen, Bavaria, Germany. He is an actor and director, known for Downfall (2004), Leave Without Running (2009) and Die Chefin (2012). He is married to Eva Tonkel. He was previously married to Daniela Tolkien."
It's definitely him, as I half recognise the 60-year-old version of the 18-year-old I knew, plus Wolfratshausen is where I stayed on both visits!

  8. A merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to you and yours Tony.
I’ve never been to Regensburg but it looks well worth a visit.

    All the best. Aly

  9. Season's Greetings to you too. One day we will be back in Europe where we belong, although not on such good terms as we had and probably not in our lifetimes. And yes, 2023 has been a bit of a stinker, hasn't it? I don't want to be too pessimistic but I don't quite see 2024 as vastly better worldwide... So try to enjoy the holiday! (That somehow reminds me of the saying Germans had towards the end of WW2, thinking that the allies were going to trash Germany because of the demand for unconditional surrender: "Enjoy the war as the peace will be terrible...")

  10. Thank you all, gentlemen, for your good wishes, and may God rest ye, as the song goes. Let us trust that there is, in fact, a measure of hope in the arrival of a New Year, and make the best of it. Certainly, if I were going to try to hang on to a past year, 2023 would not be an obvious choice!

  11. The famous bridge made it clear we were looking at Regensburg; I visited there in May of 1974; lovely. We'll see if my wife has much appetite for travel after i retire in less than 2 years! Things could certainly be better in the world for sure. We make the best of what we have, and we still have a lot. Have a very happy Christmas, Tony!
