Background Artillery Project - Further Progress

Five more French limbers completed and in the boxes - 3 foot artillery and 2 horse. I've kept the size and detail of the photo down, and left the flash switched off, to avoid another roasting from my new chums at TMP.

For the train spotters, the horses and drivers are from Art Miniaturen and Scruby, the limbers from Hinchliffe 20mm, Minifigs S-Range and early Lamming, and the guns - the ones I can identify - are from NapoleoN, Hinchliffe 20 and Scruby.

This expansion necessitated a reorganisation of the artillery box files - I now have a new box labelled MULES & CARTS. Guess what's in that one?

  1. More smart looking transport (even though they are lacking in Hinton Hunt) - I continue to marvel at your logistical tail...

    1. Ian - I have to tell you (and you read it here first...) that there may be a pro-Hinton push coming eventually. I am collecting British HH artillery horses, and if I can get enough decent drivers to match there may well be a Background Artillery Creeping Elegance Follow-up Project to replace my Lamming Royal Artillery horses and drivers - who are just a teensy bit overscale and a very large bit too ugly. Don't hold your breath, but it is easy enough to lever the teams off the MDF bases and drop new ones in, and it seems a decent idea.

Most armies don't have much of a logistical tail, I guess, because their owners had a good feel for when to stop, and because such things have little use in a game - not quite true - I sometimes switch the limbers for the deployed batteries when they are on the move - though this rather depends on whether I've got enough limbers to go round. These new arrivals should help standardise all that.

My next French-side limbers will be one for the Italians and one for Stralsund-Rügen. There's a few to do for the Spaniards, but they will have teams of mules - I have the animals and the vehicles and gunners set aside ready.

When your Background Project is in the foreground, it's time for a rethink...

  2. Wow! You are a glutton for punishment. So many limbers and teams jumping off the assembly line in rapid succession. Perhaps a short burst to push these out is better than producing them in dribs and drabs?

    Nevertheless, outstanding work!

    1. Hi Jonathan - the rush of deliveries probably masks the length of the assembly line! - the predecessors of these pieces were Airfix, and went away a good few years ago - for this particular batch, the horses were painted (pretty much) at the start of the year, and some of the metal here has been in the pile since the 1970s - the Hinchliffe 20 bits especially! It's good to get them done, though.

My next paint job may be the refurbishment of a very old and very tatty regiment of Garrison line Chasseurs à Cheval, which I think I got from Terry Wise - I'm going to have to improvise some command figures (conversion work alert!) and do a lot of repainting. No forecasts are available at this time!

  3. Good looking limbers and teams there! Glad to see there is someone else out there assembling a formidable transport and supply 'tail' for his armies. And equally reassuring to see such single-minded focus in our current age of hobby butterflies. Well done on all counts!

    Best Regards,

    Stokes

    1. Thank you Stokes - sometimes my inability to think of more than one thing at a time brings benefits!

    1. Merci bien, Monsieur le Poilu.

One of the challenges/problems of collecting a scale which became defunct years ago is that I have to improvise with odd mixtures of whatever I can get hold of. 28mm and 15mm boys can just order in new figures by the kilo - where is the fun in that? (though it does seem attractive, occasionally..)
