WSS: Game Coming Up on Thursday

All set up, ready. This will be the first face-to-face game I've hosted for over 2 years, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Somewhere in the Rhineland, not far from Landau, mid-1703. On your left you see Prince Eugène of Savoy with an Allied army (Austrians and Hessians), opposed by a French force commanded by Marshal Marsin.

If you drop by here later in the week, you should read more about it. 1970s-style 20mm toy soldiers; linear warfare - you'd better believe it.

    1. I'm going to be the French. I shall now have to think beyond having all the correct troops in the right places, labelled accurately, and come up with some plan for beating the bloody Austrians...

    1. Thanks Mike - if the game goes well I may try a couple of re-plays using Zoom before I put everything away!

    1. Thanks Donnie. I have to confess that in the build up to this game I had a go at assembling and painting a 3D-printed church that I've had lying around for a while. Not great - the print was poor quality, and also the model was designed to be produced in a larger scale. Nothing fitted; after 2 evenings of mucking about, trying to fake it with acrylic putty and sandpaper, I decided this was a waste of effort and binned it. In fact that's quite a relief, and I've gone back to my trusty ceramic "ornament" buildings. My German villages usually look like Norfolk anyway, so this is all very comfortable.

  4. Well, the table looks great, I'll look forward to seeing the battle unfold and all that 20mm goodness! It is odd how you get out of practice doing f2f games, the majority of mine are still remote but I did run a f2f recently. Good luck!

    1. f2f has advantage that other players are unlikely to be taking the piss via Zoom messaging. More seriously, I am comfortable with Zoom if I am hosting, but the furry pictures are tricky if I'm a remote player - this is getting to be a significant issue.

  6. Welcome back to cameraderie of the wargames table; I enjoy gaming as a chance to socialise as much as play.

    1. Indeed so. Things went downhill here with Covid and subsequent family difficulties. If I didn't talk to myself I'd forget how to speak. Looking forward to the session.

    1. Thank you Matt - my guest general is Stryker, so a jovial session is guaranteed! All my tables look pretty much the same, so I guess I must like this sort of thing!

  8. Good luck mate. I hope you’re using CJL?

    1. CJL 1.02 - as sure as you're born. The Litest of Lite rules. This will be my first f2f use of the new activation cubes - as long as we don't throw them at each other we'll be fine. [A couple of potential gentle tweaks in the pipeline - nothing dangerous - I must send you a short note on that, since you probably don't have enough rubbish in your life already...]

  10. Looks like great fun! Are you using Command & Colors? A while back I created a somewhat improved ruleset based on C&C, but a bit better (imho). I ran it at quite a few Little Wars and one Historicon. Email me if you’d like a copy. gdrover65@gmail.com

  11. Hello Tony, wonderful to see you still 'at it' and of course it's always a pleasure to see that lovely table/hex board and fine shiny troops of yours. The score board is pure class and worthy of the general set up. Long may it continue.
    All the best,
    Lee.

    1. Thanks very much Lee - if The Plague stays away, I hope to get back to hosting games on a more regular basis. The scoreboard sends its best wishes!

  12. Hi Tony, great to hear you are hosting games again. I too have been far to delinquent in that regard. I must admit, I read all about this encounter on Striker's Blog, but was delighted to see amongst your photos, a shot of the man himself. I don't know that I had ever actually seen him in the flesh so to speak! Living in the US does have it's disadvantages. :(

    1. Greetings David - yes, it was good to get back to what used to be a more familiar situation. Ian's photos are always better than mine. I'd like to blame my camera, but I guess there is no answer to ability.

Photos of the participants are accidental, and usually edited out of our game reports for privacy reasons, but I left this one in because it gives a good idea of what the games are like (pure hell). Your idea of meeting Stryker in the flesh is possibly a vision too far, but a fine chap and a good friend.

As for living in the US, I'm praying for you all. I hope your Grate Leadur is not going to fire any live shells around your neighbourhood any time soon. A late addition to Foy's Laws might be, "Never give a lunatic an army to show off with". Anyway, my Preston Grannie used to say, "if you have nothing nice to say, then just button it", which is a useful guideline, so I shall just nod and smile enigmatically.

    2. I've been doing a lot of nodding and smiling these days! Nashville is largely a blue pocket, so I don't run into the MAGA crowd often, but they are around and sometimes quite "special"...
