ECW 20mm Figure Comparison

Here are figures from Irregular (their Restoration range), Hinton Hunt and Les Higgins. The figure marked with a carat on the right hand end is one of the first batch of LH officers, which are smaller.

Hinton Hunt probably very slightly larger than Higgins, but the hats and horses match - near enough for me, I think.

  1. the small figure at end of row was intended to be Charles 1, he was small anyway, the mounted Irregular figure if put on LH horse looks fine and ideal for WSS, have several in my WSS armies

    1. Hi John - my apologies to His Majesty, he's too small for me to recognise him! Of the 4 figures in Higgins EP1 officer set, this is the smallest, admittedly. The remainder of the Higgins ECW range, and the HH's I've seen, average about 22mm soles-to-scalp - Charles I is 19mm - if an average soldier was say 5'7" in thise days, that makes Charlie Boy Rex 4'10". As ever, I'll accept your judgement on all matters - even the Irregular figures. Cheers - Tony

  2. Tony, I suspect that particular officer is Charles I - according to Monty Python the most interesting thing about King Charles the First is that he was 5 foot 6 inches tall at the start of his reign, but only 4 foot 8 at the end of it - so short could be good.

    1. Hi Clive - please see my response to John, above. Failure to recognise a king is pretty serious, though not as bad as beheading him. I was aware of Charles being of slight stature, but hadn't realised he was as small as that. For no particular reason, I am reminded of one of my favourite kings, Olaf the Morsel, best known(?) for his decree establishing the independence of the church of the Isle of Man in 1134.

      Cheers - Tony

  3. I do think the "Quindia Studio's Victory without Quarter" free rules do have potential for making a good hex based game. Maybe jugle a bit with unit and base composition, but it should work and I think they give a rather good game.

    1. Hi Pjotr - thanks for this - a few people have mentioned this rule set, and I have a copy. I've only had a quick glance, but I liked the simple approach, especially the multiple-figure stands. As an aside, I really don't fancy singly-based figures, which feature in most rules I've read - though I could use magnetic sheet to mount them on sabots.

      Cheers - Tony

  4. Typical anti-Royalist propaganda - Charles I was actually 6 foot 2 inches tall. God save the King!!!

    1. Perhaps Charles just surrounded himself with 15mm courtiers? - or Irregular 20mm? - Tony

  5. Best of luck with the project - Revell and Zvesda plastics are also worth a look.
