French Refurb: ex-Eric Knowles units

Just a quickie - these chaps appeared fleetingly here the other day - they are now properly based up and supplied with my home-made flags, so I've taken official photos for the Service Catalogue, and they can stand ready in The Cupboard. They are now the first and second battalions of the 1er Ligne, who are perfect for Thomieres' Divn at Salamanca or for service on the Danube.

Figures are, for the most part, Eric's 1960s Hinton Hunts, and as far as possible I have preserved his paintwork. I obtained some suitable HH drummers, but the rest of the command figures are SHQ, which fit in well both for size and style.

It is indeed an honour to be able to keep Eric's soldiers on active service. I'm confident they will march on for many years. Thanks to Dave Crook for rescuing them!

    1. Thanks Jon - the rank and file have really only had some gentle freshening of the white and red paint, some chip touch-up and fresh varnish - one of the easier refurb tsaks of recent months! Eric did a nice job on these, back in the day.

  2. Nice to think they are going to keep on giving pleasure to gamers. When you think of the time money and effort we spend on these things, it's reassuring that they've not just ended up in a bin bag.

    1. Absolutely agree. The distressing subject of little soldiers in landfill sites is in my mind a lot these days!

  3. Very handsome battalions. My original French Napoleonic army, painted in the 1970's, were Scruby figures. Hinton Hunts made up a small number of troops, mostly things I couldn't get otherwise.

    1. My history with HH is dominated by the fact that I started buying them when the moulds were mostly in poor shape. Face to face contact with the real 1960s figures is a different matter altogether! These appear more substantial, somehow. I guess the story with Scruby is similar.

  5. Hello old chap.

They look very business like indeed! It is really good that they will once again stride across the field of glory - well done that man!

In all seriousness this is what Bill, Eric's son, wanted - to see his father's collection being enjoyed once again by gamers that 'get it'.

    All the best,

    DC

    1. Thanks Ian - I'm pleased with them. Apart from scratching around for command figures, this was a very easy job - sometimes it just works out, but the raw materials were unusually good this time!

    1. It is nice - I think I'm at my best when I just have to wash the figures a bit and put them on new bases!
